Teaching in the Galleries

The Kemper Art Museum is now accepting applications for Teaching in the Galleries, a student docent program that enables Washington University students, both undergraduate and graduate, to learn about 19th, 20th, and 21st century works of art, and to share this knowledge with Museum visitors in an engaging fashion. Docents may choose to focus on works from the Museum's permanent collection or special exhibitions.

The Kemper offers a stimulating and supportive training program that encourages personal interaction with the works and presents strategies on how to discuss these works with Museum visitors in a stimulating way. Docents also take excursions with members of the education staff to other St. Louis area museums and are invited to participate in numerous public events. It is also possible for participants to earn one academic credit.

The docent program is a great way for students to broaden their knowledge of art history, share this knowledge with members of the community, build on communication and public speaking skills, and become involved in a professional museum environment. In recent years, student docents have led tours for university classes, high school students, and Parents Weekend, among others. Past docents have moved on to internships and professional positions at museums and arts organizations across the country, building from their experiences at the Kemper.
